I aint a cabbie so I dont know about their tax, what I do know is, the only people allowed to ply for hire and use a meter is a hackney carriage, uber do exactly the same thing and that is against the law of the land, tfl turned a blind eye to them more than likely because goldman sachs have their fingers in the uber pie. So when people say its like coffee shops opeing next to each other that is nonsense as that is legal, the way uber operates is illegal.

People already have other options but you're right it's not about quality.

Re: Uber cabs
its not about quality, it's about choice.

The customer may believe Starbucks offers better value than its competitors.

They could always pay more for better coffee if they chose to do so.

Doesn't come close to the fleecing the tax office get by black cabbies. You know, good luck to those that have been getting away with it for years, but as has been said, don't start crying when you're hit by a bit of competition.

I feel more sorry for those in the building trade who have been breaking their backs for a living for years getting outdone.

Re: Uber cabs
The market may work but it is not efficient at managing quality. There wouldn't be Starbucks if it were.

Re: Uber cabs
You'd better hope that Uber do not drive out the opposition and get a monopoly. Their surge, or dynamic, pricing policy will be applied with a vengeance.

There are competitors to Uber. If they start taking the piss, another company will step in. A bit like what Uber have done to Adison Lee.

The market is pretty efficient at managing this sort of thing.

Re: Uber cabs
I see nothing wrong with Uber and Black Cabs. Uber have a great business model and as long as Black Cabs get into the 21st century they will be fine. Monopolies always get lazy.

The surge pricing is just market forces, if you don't like it, don't pay it.

I think Uber will grow and grow, they are convenient and clean. As for the unregulated stuff, they are regulated by TfL and the same background checks are done as for a black cab driver.

There are black cab driver cunts and there are Uber driver cunts, these people being cunts has nothing to do with their umbrella organisation they work under.

I do like the Uber app, you see where the guy is, what he looks like and you can track your route so you never feel ripped off.

The knowledge is a slightly outdated concept nowdays, it was introduced so drivers would know where they are going so the original purpose of it is now defunct but I have no problem with it still being there and black cabbies being able to charge more as a result.

They are banned in Holland but still base their business there so they dont have to pay any uk tax.

A rage-filled Uber driver threatened to cut a London university lecturer's neck in a chilling voicemail message that emerged today.

Anna Kealey, 28, said she "could not believe" the violence of the driver's outburst after discovering the "menacing" recording on her phone this afternoon.

The lecturer had used the taxi app to order a cab to her home in Hackney, but cancelled before the car arrived.

The incensed minicab driver called her up and ranted for nearly a minute, becoming increasingly irate as he told her "don't do that again" and called her an "idiot" and "stupid".

But the darkest moment came when he warned her: "Don't do it again, otherwise I will cut your neck."

She told the Standard: "I felt sick to my stomach when I heard it, I almost fell over.

"It starts off quite vile, but by the end it gets so violent, I just couldn't believe the language he was using.

"There are parts where I didn't even understand what he was saying, which is probably a good thing, but the cut your throat threat was very clear.

"I felt disgusted. It's so menacing at the end."

Ms Kealey, a lecturer in design history at the University of the Arts London, only found the message on her phone after catching up with her voicemails today.

It was left after she used the taxi app about 10 days ago, when she was going to meet friends for brunch.

She said she sometimes gets panic attacks and decided to cancel after just a few minutes, as she was feeling claustrophobic and preferred to walk.

"He sounded unstable," she added.

"The idea that he's out on London's stressful roads with that sort of anger makes it all the more nerveracking.

"My first thought was, 'Who has he picked up and has anything happened?'"

Uber said it immediately suspended the driver and would work with Ms Kealey and police.

Ms Kealey said she would not completely "swear off" using the app again, but added: "It's made me concerned about travelling in general as a young woman, whether with Uber or anyone else. You just can't let your guard down."

An Uber spokesman said: "We have spoken to the rider to ensure they are okay and encouraged them to report this the police.

"The driver has been immediately suspended, as is our policy, and we are investigating fully."

He added that there is no charge if a trip is cancelled within five minutes, after which there is a £5 fee which goes to the driver.

Yes Fifth forgot what it must be like trying to get a cabbie's number when you are that pissed, especially when you can't even remember where you are.

Re: Uber cabs
Uber raised their prices today 300%, black cabs work as normal. I dont suppose the Dutch based operation will be paying any of the 300% rise to the tax office.

Banned in quite a few places around the world. Drivers are often unqualified and unregulated.

Re: Uber cabs
Feel the need to speak up for the cab trade a bit here. Prices are not set by cab drivers, they are set by TFL the driver has no say whatsoever. A taxi costs 40k+ and is fully accessible to the disabled. Taxis have to have and display full comprehensive h+r insurance. Yes there's good money in the game but do not overlook the huge expenses. The trade is far from perfect, there are lots of "cash only" mugs and those who knock jobs they can't be arses to do but if any good has come from this uber business it's that the trade is starting to wake up to apps, credit cards taking over etc. As for Uber there are people that use them with no problem but there are also tens of thousands of publicly viewable complaints, hacking, alleged sexual assault, drivers not having a clue where they're going etc. Theyve also been prpsecuted and fined for having uninsured drivers. During the tube strike tonight they were charging £7.10 per mile minimum fare £28. As for the knowledge it's a matter of opinion, sat navs are fine in the suburbs but in the city, west end etc the knowledge is worth it's weight in gold. Only have to look at how many accidents Über have been involved in since they launched in London. Taxis aren't for everyone and everyone has their opinions and stereotypes, some founded some bollocks but if you don't like taxis use a proper minicab firm who play by the rules, have an office and you can phone em up if anything goes wrong.

Charley

When they used to zoom off after you told them in the window where you were going it would be impossible to take their numbers. As I said it hasn't happened to me for years since Livingstone authorised increase in the fares they charge. However, prior to that it happened all the time and I've always thought they were cunts for doing that. I Remember about 25 years ago I saw one cabbie use a crow bar to get the hubcap off another black cab and drive off. Still, the bloke whose hub cap got nicked probably just blamed it on the immigrants so he had something to talk about to his passengers.

Re: Uber cabs
London taxi drivers have run a monopoly for decades and unsurprising can't accept progress.
I work in building and have managed alright even with the influx of cheap foreign labour.
It's a free market and their days have gone.

Re: Uber cabs
Used to love knocking cabs in my younger days, was even my main hobby at one point,
Used to love wasting a foreigners time and money, used to sit up front for added buzz, had some lovely escape routes on my manor they didn't know what hit them half the time, then all came to a end one night when after a sloppy escape my mate struggled to keep up from a cabbie who pursued us like Carl Lewis, mate slipped over after hitting a pile of shit taking his shoulder out on a fence, that prompted me to break my golden rule of never stopping and never feeling sorry for someone, ended up paying the cabbie in advance to take us to hospital.

The shame
Used to ring my sister for lifts after that night

I use them all the time coming out of raves. Life savers. Cheap as anything.

Re: Uber cabs
But the whole point is black cabs are a public service and they don't have a choice, they put their for hire sign on to say their available and they go where you want, if they refuse, you take their number and report it to the carriage office and they can take them off the road

Re: Uber cabs
In theory I think it's cos it's so hard to get a return fare (there's traditionally fuck all in terms of night life or whatever) but in practise I've never really had any aggro in getting to/from/around south London after dark.
